Meta tags for Blogger: Part 1

Thursday, November 15, 2007

I had been requested to write about meta tags by one of our readers. He did put up the suggestion a few times. Here, I am going to write a series of posts on meta tags.

What are Meta Tags?
Meta tags are pieces of code that reside inside the HTML document of a web page. They are often not directly visible to the visitor. Meta tags provide relevant information about a blog or webpage, to help search engines categorize them.

Initially, I am a bit reluctant to write about meta tags. The simple reason is that meta tags are not popular nowadays. And if you do not use them properly, it may backfire on your search engine rankings, especially Google.

On the positive side, few search engines still give importance to meta tags. Use them properly and you may reap the benefits. Yahoo provides the following tips to improve your ranking in their search:
  • Use a "description" meta-tag and write your description accurately and carefully. After the title, the description is the most important draw for users. Make sure the document title and description attract the interest of the user but also fit the content on your site.

  • Use a "keyword" meta-tag to list key words for the document. Use a distinct list of keywords that relate to the specific page on your site instead of using one broad set of keywords for every page.
I will soon be posting Meta tags: Part 2, where I will explain about meta tags in much more detail. Please subscribe to my feed if you like this post
