Alexa Traffic Rank: In the Top 500K blogs

Sunday, December 23, 2007

My blog is currently ranked by Alexa among the Top 500K blogs. I have written about Alexa Traffic Ranks before. I have discussed how my Alexa Traffic Rank has increased in two of my earlier posts Alexa Rank: My blog jumps up by 2 million spots and My blog continues to grow in Alexa Ranking.

I have read many negative discussions that Alexa’s ranking system can be manipulated and is not useful. I do not want to go into that discussion now. I personally feel that Alexa Traffic rank has consistently followed the trend of my traffic. Whenever the traffic of this blog increased, Alexa Traffic Rank followed and went higher up. If I could plot my blog traffic statistics against Alexa Traffic Rank, they should correlate very well.

Let me give you an example. My current Alexa Rank is 440,817, which is based on the 3-months average. As I have told you in my last post, I have not been really active for the last two weeks. This has brought my traffic to a relatively low level. Alexa Traffic has accurately captured this in the ranking. The 1-week average shows my blog down at 767,529. How great?

Forget about tweaking the Alexa Traffic Rank. It is a very useful number that warns you of a drop in your traffic. It is very dynamic unlike Google’s Page Rank, which is updated only once in 3 months; sometimes it takes longer like the last update. In my opinion, it is better than Technorati Rank. I have seen blogs in Technorati Top 100 list that have lot of links from inactive blogs.

What do you think? Do you see anything good in Alexa Traffic Rank? Please share your thoughts. Please subscribe to my feed if you like this post

Ranked #1 in Google Search

Saturday, December 22, 2007

You might have noticed a drop in my posting over the last two weeks. There are two reasons:

  1. an increase in my full-time work load and
  2. just launched a new blog titled "Knowledge Engineering". If you are interested in topics like Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge Engineering, Neural Networks, Genetic Algorithms, Fuzzy systems, Intelligent Agents and related topics, please visit my blog at Knowledge Engineering.

But, just do not go and unsubscribe from my blog straightaway. I am coming out with a post soon on Top Commentators Widget for Blogger and another one on the Popular Posts Widget for Blogger (the AffiliateBrand version). Let us get back to the topic of this post.

Ranked #1 in Google Search

My new blog mentioned above is just about 4 days old. But, it is already indexed by Google and in fact ranked #1 for a particular search. Want proof? Look at the picture below:

Google Rank 1

Significance of the Ranking

What is the significance of ranking #1 in Google for a search "Do ants leave there saliva"? Nobody is going to search for that phrase. Right? Yes, that's true. Nobody is going to come to my blog searching for such kind of phrase odd with misspelled words.

But, look at the real gain from this. My blog, which is only about 3 days old, has been indexed. So, if I can concentrate on my posting with certain keywords I would start to move up the ladder in Google for those keywords. The real gain is not in ranking but in getting indexed.

How did I achieve this?

I am not an expert in SEO. But, how did I manage this? The credit goes to Vic from Blogger Unleashed. If you are a blogger and have not visited his blog, then do not waste any further time. Blogger Unleashed is a great resource for bloggers. To know how to get indexed/ ranked #1 in Google, please read his post at Make Money Online.

Blog Review: Tech Span

Wednesday, December 12, 2007

+++++ +++++
Blog Title: Tech Span
Blog url: http://vizlabs.blogspot.com/

Tech Span is fairly a new blog that aims to provide an insight into the latest technology trends. The blog is around for about 2 months. As of today, I notice only about 10 discussions has been posted.

I like the writing style of the author. I believe his writing will become more professional and polished as time goes by. But the updates are not regular, the break between posts extends as much as 3 weeks. Ideally, there should be a frequency set for the posting and the author should follow that. It can be once a week, twice a week or whatever the author is comfortable with.

There are too many colors in the text and it is very hard to distinguish the links. Most of the links are in blue color without any underline. Suddenly, I found one link with underline style. I also noticed non-link text in blue color. This is really misleading. The author should stick to one color and style for all the links and should not use the link color for normal text.

Similarly, I notice many colors being used to highlight certain keywords. I do agree that keywords should be highlighted. But, once again, try to use one color and style for all keywords to highlight them.

I also notice the line height is not consistent within posts. Take the post on Mash; two different line heights have been used. Some posts use a justified alignment while some are using left aligned text.

To summarize, here are my suggestions for improvement:
  1. The updates should be regular

  2. Be consistent with your styles. Choose a particular style for each element and apply it uniformly over the entire blog. Readers get used to a certain style on your blog. If something is different from the norm, they will find it difficult.

  3. You are currently using a standard Blogger template. Try to find a template that can give a better look to your blog.

  4. I suggest shifting the search box to the top of the blog.

Every blog has certain deficiencies and the feedback here is not to criticize but to help in the improvement. I hope the author would take my comments positively. My best wishes for successful blogging. If you have any feedback, positive or negative, please leave a comment here.

Quick Search for Blogger Blogs

Tuesday, December 11, 2007

A search box helps to find relevant information easily on a blog. A good navigation system alongwith a search feature would be ideal. Is there a way to search the blog even if it does not provide a search box?

The problem
As you might have experienced, some blogs do not have a search feature installed. This makes it very difficult to filter posts for a specific keyword.

For example, I have reached a blog through search engine for a keyword 'Blogger Hack'. Suppose, I landed on a page that describes how to install 'Recent Posts widget for Blogger'. I found the post useful and want to find whether there are any posts on 'Related posts widget for Blogger'. If the navigation system is good, then it is fine. What happens if I don't have a good navigation? I would like to search next. What happens if I don't see the search box also?

The Solution
Blooger has a cool solution to this. All you have to do is type the blogspot url and append search?q=keyword.

For example, if you want to search for posts that are related to widgets on this blog, then you just have to type the following url: http://assessmyblog.blogspot.com/search?q=widgets. Thats all. Blogger will retrieve all posts that contain the keyword widgets.

If you would like to search for a phrase, then you have to use search?q=keyword1+keyword2+...+keywordn. For example, to search on this blog for Widgets for Blogger, I will use http://assessmyblog.blogspot.com/search?q=widgets+for+blogger.

Conclusion
As far as I know, this trick works only with Blogger blogs. So, don't get frustrated if you can't see a search box in a Blogger blog. Use this easy and quick search feature. Please subscribe to my feed if you like this post

Blogosphere This Week - Week No. 48/2007

Let me share with you this week's compilation of posts that I found useful, from the blogosphere. If you find anything interesting, please share your thoughts here.

Everything from BloggingZoom
I am getting very much involved with BloggingZoom. Recently, I found some of the bloggers offering free backlinks just for participating in BloggingZoom. So, I thought I should do my part to promote BZ. So, all the links in this post are extracted from BZ. I selected a few discussions from the Blogging category, read their posts and provided a link here. Hi Zoomers, this is how I thank BZ and the bloggers who visited me through BZ.

Get a Freee Link From This Blog
Here is an opportunity for you to get a link from this blog. If you think one of your articles is good enough to be featured here, then leave a comment here or send me an e-mail (a_manick@rediffmail.com) with the url of the article. If I find it related to the topics of this blog and interesting, then I would include it in my next week's Blogosphere This Week Column.

  1. 35 Guaranteed Ways To Increase Your RSS Subscribers from NewestontheNet: A very good article. Most of the points discussed were familiar and known to us. But, sometimes we forget the basics of blogging and here is one blog that reminds us what we should do.

  2. BloggingZoom Stats - It Works from How to Make Money Online for Beginners: In my previous post, I wrote about the traffic I get from BloggingZoom. It is such a good program and I don't want my fellow bloggers to miss out. So, here is another proof that it really works.

  3. How to Get More Inbound Links and Visitors to Your Blog from Blogging Web 2.0: A good article that outlines 5 ways to get more inbound links and increase the traffic to your blog.

  4. How I Increased My Alexa Ranking By Nearly 2.5 Million in 7 Days from Jason A Clark: An interesting article where you can find useful tips to improve your Alexa traffic ranking. I remember that I wrote a similar post few months ago with a jump of 2 million spots in Alexa.

  5. Bloggers Are Self Centered Bitches from Blogger Unleashed: You can never succeed as a blogger alone. You need the help of other bloggers and readers to survive and grow. I have stressed the importance of this in many of my previous posts. Vic comes very hard on the bloggers who do not care about other bloggers.

Does BloggingZoom bring traffic?

Saturday, December 8, 2007

Few days ago, I wrote about the traffic that comes from BlogRush. Now, it is time to review another service that I signed up for building some traffic. Yes, this post is about BloggingZoom, the new social networking service on the net.

Why BloggingZoom?
I signed up with BloggingZoom immediately upon its launch. I was a latecomer to other services like Digg, StumbleUpon, Delicious and so on. So, I wanted to join the BloggingZoom community as early as possible to build the network. I also had a feeling that bloggers will like BZ much more than the other services. As this blog is mainly on blogging, networking with other bloggers would be the right thing to do.

Total Traffic to this blog in November
It is about a month since I joined BZ. So, I thought of doing some analysis to see whether the effort is worth. I took the data from 07 November 2007 to 07 December 2007 (Thanks to: Google Analytics). Here is the traffic statistics during the above period:
Site Traffic 07 Nov 07 - 07 Dec 07

So, the above period of 30 days brought in 956 visitors who had given me about 2021 page views.

Contribution from BloggingZoom
How much is the contribution from BloggingZoom? The following picture will give you an idea about that.
Nov 07 Traffic from Blogging Zoom

As you can see, BZ has contributed about 11% of my total traffic. In absolute numbers, it has brought about 103 visitors who contributed to about 150 page views. I think that is really a significant amount of traffic.

Further Analysis
Let us look at all the traffic sources that have brought in traffic to this site during the above period.
Traffic Sources Nov07-Dec 07

If I ignore the direct traffic and the search engines traffic, there are 604 visits from various referring sites. The 103 visits from BZ works out to a high proportion of 17% of the referring sites.

How to get traffic from BloggingZoom?
It is not easy to get the traffic from BZ. You have to work hard for it. I have posted about 15 discussions on BZ to bring 103 visitors. But, more importantly, I have also zoomed close to 200 discussions of other bloggers and visited their blogs. I have added many bloggers as my friends. For every comment left for my discussion, I responded with a thank you note.

Tips to optimize the returns from BZ:
  1. Spend about 30 minutes every day on BZ.
  2. Only post good discussions from your blog. Search through your archives for your popular articles. Use attractive titles, not necessarily your post title. Categorize them correctly.
  3. Do not come out with a new tag for yourself. Look at the popular tags and try to classify yours under one of them.
  4. Once you have posted a discussion, take some time to read other discussions and zoom them, leave comments or visit their blogs.
  5. Whenever someone zooms you, visit their profile and read their discussions and zoom them, leave comments or visit their blogs.
  6. Whenever someone comments on your discussion, respond with a thank you note and try to continue the discussion.
  7. Before complaining that no one zooms you, think whether you have zoomed any one. It is a network of bloggers. If you give something, they will certainly return it.
Conclusion
I find BloggingZoom a very good service for bloggers. If you have not joined them yet, please do so. Remember that you won't get the traffic for free. You need not spend money, but you have to spend time. But, believe me, it is worth. Please subscribe to my feed if you like this post.

Answers To Crucial Questions About Care

Do you care for your loved ones? Do you spend enough time to take care of them? Have you felt guilty of leaving your old parents or grandparents alone at home? Or you have been one among those left alone without any care?

If you have answered yes to some of the above questions, then it is time for you to take a look at some of the care services available. Before making a decision, you should investigate the locations and care options available carefully. You may have to find care homes in your area and visit at least a few of them to see what is on offer. It is also worth finding from your circle of friends, colleagues or relatives of a home with a good reputation. Remember, that although a personal recommendation is a good starting point, homes can change, and what suits one person may not suit another!

A proper care service could include home assistance, such as alterations to make your house more suitable for your changed circumstances. The package could include some counselling and support if you’ve become depressed. Alternatively, it could include care based in a residential home.

When it comes to long-term care, we all want to make the ideal choice, for ourselves and our loved ones. Arranging the right kind of care is very important for your welfare and your peace of mind. Do the necessary ground work, make the right choice and sleep in peace.

Blog Review: Online Earning Opportunities

Thursday, December 6, 2007

+++++ +++++
Blog Title: Online Earning Opportunities
Blog url: http://www.bucksfrominternet.com/

I am doing a blog review, after a long break. My last review was in October. I am finding it difficult to cope with the pressure of completing the requests for blog review. Anyway, as I have promised at the beginning of the month I will finish off those pending requests by the end of this month. Sorry, back to the review of the blog.

I don't have any great complaints against the blog. On the first look, it looks OK to me. The only suggestion I have is to move away from the standard Blogger template. There are many free Blogger templates available online, that would give a much more professional look to this site.

Another problem I noted is, the blog is using fluid width for the main content as well as the sidebar. Due to this, the advertisements on the sidebar cannot be displayed full when the window is reduced to a smaller size. My suggestion is to use fixed-width columns that give much more control on the layout. If not, at least use a fixed-width column for the sidebar.

The navigation is good with the popular posts widget, recent comments widget and the labels widget being in action. In addition, there is a menu at the top and a search box on the top-left corner.

The link to the subcription request at the post footer is not obvious. Make the style of this link same as the links on the post. Then it would be easier to notice the links.

The updates are regular and there is good amount of content on the site. There are posts on a considerable number of online money programs. Take some time to read and explore them for yourself.

Why my posts were not syndicated?

I have written about the traffic from BlogRush a few days ago. I did receive considerable feedback from other bloggers, in this blog as well as over at BloggingZoom. The most interesting comment came from Saedel. He has pointed out in his post BlogRush Censors Unfavorable Reviews? as below:

"Based on my experience, it looks like BlogRush (I’ll call it BR from time-to-time here onwards) is trying to unexpose honest reviews that don’t favor them."

Do I face the same problem?

Saedel has mentioned that BlogRush is filtering out all the reviews about them. I did a quick check to see whether my post on BlogRush, dated 2nd December 2007, was syndicated across the network. To my surprise, I cannot find this particular post on the syndication list.

BlogRush Report

I have posted 4 posts in December so far, one each on 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th December. As you can see, three of them has been syndicated. Only the post on BlogRush has not been syndicated.

Why the particular post was not syndicated?

I do not want to jump into any conclusion yet. I just remembered that this was not my first post on BlogRush. When I checked through my archive, I noticed that there were eight posts in all, including the latest one, mentioning about BlogRush. When I checked the BlogRush reports, only four of them were not syndicated:

  1. Constructive Changes to BlogRush
  2. Is PageRank the best way to measure the success of a blog?
  3. 10,000+ blogs removed from BlogRush
  4. Does BlogRush bring any traffic?

My immediate finding is that BlogRush is filtering out those posts with the word "BlogRush" in the title. If you have the word inside the discussion, it seems all right. But, to my surprise, the post on PageRank was also not syndicated. I have mentioned about BlogRush in the content, but that may not be the reason.

Further Checks

I did search my blog, once again, for posts with the word "PageRank" in the title. I had two posts satisfying the search and as I expected, both were not syndicated. In addition to the above post with the word "PageRank", the following is the other post:

  1. Great News: I got Google PageRank 2

Findings

From my study, I conclude the following:

  1. BlogRush is filtering out posts with the word "BlogRush" in the title. I have purposely avoided the same word in this post title and I want to see whether this will be syndicated. In all probability, it should.
  2. The posts with the word "PageRank" in the title are also filtered.

Conclusion

Initially, I thought only the reviews on BlogRush has been filtered out as Saedel has pointed out. The whole problem may be due to some glitch in the system. But, we do not know until John Reese and his team explain the rationale behind this.

Do you face this problem? Has any of your post been filtered? Feel free to share with us here. Please subscribe to my feed if you like this post.

Popular Posts Widget for Blogger

Wednesday, December 5, 2007

UPDATE on 13 May 08: This widget is no longer available as Spotplex has gone offline since 09 May 08. Please read the latest news about Spotplex here.

In this post, I am going to share with you how to install the popular posts widget for Blogger. This widget will display a list of your popular articles, ranked by the number of views. Please read my earlier posts on Blogger hacks to know how to install the Recent posts widget, Recent comments widget, Poll widget and Related posts widget.

Current status
List of popular posts is, by far, the most difficult widget to implement and I had seen very little work on this area for Blogger/ Blogspot. Earlier, I have used a version from AffiliateBrand, which I will discuss in another post. Now, I am going to recommend another version from Spotplex, which I found more powerful.

How to install the tracking code?
The following steps will guide you through the simple installation procedure
  1. Please click here to go to Spotplex home page.
  2. Once the home page is opened, please click on the rectangle near the top-right corner of the page with the title “Get your Spotplex code”
    PopularPosts_1
  3. Step 1: Register your blog
    • Type your blog address
    • Click on the button “Get my Spotplex code”
      PopularPosts_2
  4. Step 2: Blog information
    • The title will automatically be retrieved. If you want to change it, then do so.
    • Write a simple description for your blog
    • Select the categories, maximum of 3
    • Select your blog’s language
    • Type in your e-mail address
    • Check on the “I agree to the terms …”
    • Click on the “Submit” button
      PopularPosts_3
  5. Step 3: Get your Spotplex code
    • This is basically the credit to Spotplex. Choose whether you want to display an image or no image
    • Then, select the blogging platform. If your blog is on Blogger, then choose Blogger
    • Click the button “Install Spotplex Widget”
    • This will open the login page for Blogger. Login with your account and install the Spotplex widget.
      PopularPosts_4

You have just completed the installation of the tracking code that will track the page views on your blog. The next part is to install the Popular posts widget. Install the tracking code as explained above, otherwise the popular posts widget will not work.

How to install the Popular Posts Widget?

  1. Click on the link “Get widget” just below the header

    PopularPosts_5

  2. Scope: Choose “Specific blog” to display the popular articles of your own blog
  3. Type: Type your blog url or the Spotplex code in the text box and then select “Popular Articles”
  4. Options:
    • Choose the period for refreshing the popular articles. If you select “24 hours”, it will display your popular articles over the last 24 hours. If you select “All time”, it will display your all time popular posts
    • Choose the width and height based on your sidebar dimensions
    • Choose how many posts to display, 5, 10 or 15
    • Click on “Get this widget”
      PopularPosts_6
  5. This will display the HTML code for the widget. Copy the code to clipboard.
    PopularPosts_7
  6. Login to your Blogger account
  7. On the dashboard, Click on “Layout”
  8. On the Page elements tab, click on “Add a page element”
  9. Under the page element “HTML/Javascript”, click "Add to Blog"
  10. Paste the code from Spotplex and save the page element

That’s it. You have completed the installation. Wait for some time to let Spotplex collect the data. Then, the popular posts widget will start showing your popular articles with the number of views for each post as shown below:

PopularPosts_8

Blogosphere This Week - Week No. 48/2007

Here is this week's compilation of posts that I found useful, from the blogosphere. Please share your thoughts on the posts listed here. Do you have anything to add on, that you might have come across in the blogosphere? Feel free to add any interesting topic from your own blogs.

  1. You’re Banned from JohnCow.com: Most of the bloggers complain about lack of commenting on their blogs. But, it seems like John Cow has a different set of problems. He is banning a reader for commenting too much.

  2. Blog Income Report – November 2007 from JohnChow.com: John Chow once again starts the month with his income report. His latest report shows an earning of $27,240.83 in the month of November.

  3. Introducing Windows Live Writer: A Desktop Blog Publishing Application from BloggingTips.com: I regularly hear that Windows Live Writer is a wonderful blog editor. I had some problems with the installation a few weeks ago and gave it up. It seems I need to make an attempt again.

  4. 50 Great Widgets For Your Blog from money-gold.blogspot.com: This post lists a good collection of widgets for bloggers. A few sentences that describe the widget gives a clear indication of what the widget can do.

  5. How Much Money Do Bloggers Earn Blogging? from Problogger.net: Darren has conducted a poll on the monthly earnings of bloggers. His poll result reveals that about 49% of the bloggers earn less than $100 per month. I am one among them.

Does BlogRush bring any traffic?

Sunday, December 2, 2007

We had seen lot of buzz about BlogRush in the last two months. The grand launch was followed by unexpected huge response from the bloggers. As a result, BlogRush went into the hiding for close to a month and came back with a bang.

How is my blog doing?
When I first saw the phase 2 reports, I was really impressed. The reports are really attractive and very use to analyze. But, the bottom line is whether BlogRush bringing in any traffic to you? I thought of doing a simple study and took the data for the last 30 days. Here is the screen shot of my credits earned:

BlogRush Report
The numbers look really good with about 14,000 bonus credits earned in addition to the 10,000 credits earned by my traffic and my referrals traffic. But, the real picture emerges when I consider the number of visitors it brought to our blog.

Visitors from BlogRush
Conversion Rate
It brought about 12 visitors. So, the conversion rate works out to about 0.05%. If I just ignore the bonus credits and compute the click rate based on my credits and my referral credits, it works out to about 0.12%. That is just one click for every 1000 displays of the title links.

Important Observation
I have noted another strange behaviour in my referral statistics graph. Take a look at the following graph:

Referral Traffic
I found it difficult to comprehend the sudden drop in the referral credits. I believe this may be due to those bloggers removing the widget from the blog. Does that dipping graph is in line with a dipping interest about BlogRush? In fact, I don't see any traffic from 3 of my first level referrals. Quite strange.

Conclusion
Is BlogRush doing justice to the precious sidebar space it is occupying? It is difficult to answer. I am not doing anything more than just displaying the widget. No promotion, no time spent on it. I agree that BloggingZoom has brought in much more traffic, but I also had to spend few hours regularly to achieve that. So, 12 visitors a month to this blog (about 1.5% of total traffic) from BlogRush has come without any additional effort.

If your sidebar is precious enough and you can do something better, then BlogRush is not worth continuing with. But, if you are just going to fill your sidebar with another ad, then I would suggest retaining the widget to get some traffic without a sweat.

A quick round-up of November 2007

Saturday, December 1, 2007

Round-up of November 2007November 2007 was another eventful month for this blog. Continuing with the trend over the last two months, our blog went further up in popularity and rankings. During this month, we achieved the 100 posts milestone and continued to post at an average of one post a day.

It was the Google ranking in October 2007. In November 2007, this blog took pride in being listed among the Top 100 blogs on blogging. As I said in my October roundup, this blog broke into the top one million blogs in Alexa traffic ranking. The blog also got ranked in RealRank by Izea. The following is the current standing of this blog:

Marco’s Top Blogging Blogs List: #66 (New Ranking)
Google Page Rank: 2/10 (No change from last month)
Alexa Traffic Rank: 664,445 (October Rank: 1,062,298)
Technorati Rank: 174,961 (October Rank: 415,686)
RealRank: 1,057 (New Ranking)

I have written the following posts on building traffic to your blog:

The regular weekly updates included some great posts from the blogosphere. While I have not written anything on Blogger hacks or widgets for Blogger, there are some wonderful widgets listed in the following posts. If you have not read them before, take a look at it now.

The following posts concentrated on the blogging tips:

We also had some fun along the way:

While I am happy about this month’s performance, I feel a bit guilty about not being able to accede to some review requests made sometime ago. Even though I have drifted away from the original intent of this blog, I would still finish of my commitments made earlier. I apologize for the delay, but I will clear all those blogs in the review queue by the end of December.
